🧠 Lecture: "Life on the Bering Sea: Stories from a Crab Scientist"
🎤 Speaker: PhD Student, Madison (Madi) Heller-Shipley
Join us for a fascinating evening as crab scientist Madison Heller-Shipley takes you aboard research vessels in the eastern Bering Sea, where she has spent more than a year of her life at sea studying commercial crab in the North Pacific.
Madi will share what day-to-day life is like on a research boat, from braving rough weather to working alongside fishers and scientists, while showing photos and videos that bring this remote, icy world to life. She will explain how this demanding fieldwork supports sustainable fisheries management and advances marine science in Alaska and beyond.
A PhD student in fisheries science at the University of Washington, Madi specializes in crustacean population dynamics, stock assessment, and management strategy evaluation. Her work has directly informed Alaska’s crab management, and her 350+ days at sea have helped shape key gear trials, collection charters, and standardized surveys.
Come hear how data collected on deck becomes science that sustains fisheries and coastal communities. Get a drink, connect, and learn at Lectures on Tap! 🙌
