Join us for a thought-provoking evening with Professor Isabella Tecson as she explores the complex world of cinema produced under authoritarian and totalitarian regimes. While propaganda certainly plays a role, many films from these regimes often defy obvious political messaging.

From examining Nazi influences in film aesthetics to the peculiarities of North Korean animated films, this lecture will delve into how storytelling survives and adapts in environments of censorship and fear. Is it possible for a movie to simply be a movie when it is crafted by the state? Together, we’ll view select films and discuss their implications.

Isabella Tecson is an adjunct professor of screenwriting, creative writing, and English at Queens College and CCNY, as well as a creative nonfiction MFA candidate. With nearly a decade of experience as a script doctor, she has contributed to numerous documentaries and indie films. Expect insights delivered with her unique humor and extensive knowledge of film history.
