🧠 Lecture: "Andy Warhol, Studio 54, and NYC's Underground Music Scene"
🎙️ Speaker: Dr. Tom Rizzuto
Few artists have reshaped culture like Andy Warhol. From his iconic pop art to his experimental films, Warhol’s influence crossed genres and generations. Yet his deep ties to New York City’s underground music scene are less widely known—and endlessly fascinating.
In this engaging lecture, Dr. Tom Rizzuto will uncover Warhol’s role as manager and artistic director of The Velvet Underground, his presence at legendary venues like CBGB, Danceteria, and Studio 54, and his early support of emerging hip hop artists. You’ll also explore the creative network around him—Madonna, Fab Five Freddy, Lou Reed, Basquiat—and how they shaped one another and the city’s cultural landscape.
Dr. Rizzuto is a professor of music history, guitar, and media at Molloy University and SUNY Old Westbury. His work, focused on music and cultural change, has appeared in Discovery Magazine, History Magazine, Arts Education Policy Review, and on the Rock and Roll Archaeology podcast.
