Gary J. Malvern, professor of trumpet and music history at Furman University, is a native of Buffalo, New York. He received his bachelor’s degree in performance and music history from Oberlin College Conservatory, and his Masters and Doctoral degrees from Yale University, where he studied with Robert Nagel.
Dr. Malvern has served as principal trumpet of the National Repertory Orchestra, the Colorado Philharmonic, the American Wind Symphony, and has played in the Greenville Symphony Orchestra since1983, serving 25 years as principal trumpet. He has performed with numerous chamber groups including Brass Ring, the Spoleto Festival Brass Quintet, and the Aurora Brass Quintet who, in 1995, was invited to perform as part of the International Brass Quintet Festival in Verona, Italy.
As a soloist and clinician, Dr. Malvern has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Malvern has served as artist in residence at the Conservatorium in Perth, Australia, and has held similar posts at Conservatories in Northern Italy. Dr. Malvern has recently recorded several works for Nuovo Musiche per Tromba (New Works for Trumpet), a CD series recorded in Verona, Italy.
In 1999, Dr. Malvern was the recipient of Furman’s Meritorious Teaching Award. In 2001 Dr. Malvern was designated as a South Carolina Distinguished Professor. He is now Professor Emeritus at Furman University. Dr. Malvern is an avid collector of rare books and art.
