More than thirty years ago, a fragile early-twentieth-century scrapbook came into the hands of twelve-year-old Ty Atkins in South Carolina. What began as curiosity grew into decades of research, gradually revealing the early life of New Castle sculptor Maurine Ligon. In this presentation, Atkins explores the formative years that shaped Miss Ligon long before her New Castle residency. Raised in a small Southern town, Ligon trained as a pioneering nurse anesthetist when the specialty was a field dominated by women. The discipline, anatomical knowledge, and technical precision required in medicine would later define her sculptural work. Alongside her professional achievements was a deep and lifelong devotion to her dogs — a personal passion that became one of her most enduring legacies in Delaware. This lecture offers new insight into Ligon's life — where medicine, inventiveness and art converge. Our speaker is Ty Atkins, personal researcher and biographer of Maurine Ligon.
This lecture is $5.00 for the general public and free to NCHS members. All attendees need an advance ticket. Seats are limited so get your tickets today!
