Lecture: Ben Miller – On Jürgen Baldiga and the danger of a single story of HIV/AIDS art

Queer komunita touží po historii. Mladí queer lidé zoufale hledají příběhy svých (myslím, že už jsem překročil věk, kdy mohu říkat „našich“) předků. Vzhledem ke globálním krizím, které se odehrávají kolem nás, není překvapivé, že mnohé z nich zajímá zejména příběh epidemie HIV a AIDS. Příliš zjednodušujících výkladů je nespočet. Jednou z klíčových pravd o aktivismu a umělecké tvorbě související s krizí HIV/AIDS je její mnohostrannost. Tento esej zkoumá fotografii Jürgena Baldigy jako queer reakci na tuto katastrofu. Baldigovy fotografie jsou queer nikoli v tom smyslu, že by se týkaly já, které je v rozporu se vším kolem sebe a které si musí vymýšlet, tvořit a hledat místo, kde může mluvit, vzkvétat a žít (ačkoli to je jejich součástí), ale v tom smyslu, že otevřeně oslavují sexuální a genderovou odlišnost, kvůli které jsme byli v minulosti i v současnosti pronásledováni, vězněni a vražděni.
Výběr fotografií Jürgena Baldigy (1959–1993) je vystavený na bienále ve Veletržním paláci do 13. září 2026. V těsném dialogu s vystavenými díly představujeme také sérii „Teplo, které dokáže dát jen oheň – série portrétů“ Arona Neuberta, jeho přítele, který jej fotografoval v posledním období života.

We invite you to a lecture by German historian and writer Ben Miller on Jürgen Baldiga and the danger of a single story of HIV/AIDS art. The lecture follows the screening of Jasco Viefhues' film Rescue the Fire, which starts at 5:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Goethe-Institut in Prague as part of the Biennale Matter of Art 2026.

There is a queer desire for history. Young queer people are desperately seeking stories of their (I think I’ve passed the age where I can say our) ancestors. Given the unfolding global crises amidst which we live, it is unsurprising that many are particularly interested in the story of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Overly simplistic narratives are legion. One of the crucial truths about the activism and artistic production around the HIV/AIDS crisis has been its polyvalence. This essay explores the photography of Jürgen Baldiga as a queer response to the catastrophe. Baldiga’s photographs are queer not in the sense of being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live (though that is a part of it), but queer as in unapologetic celebrations of the sex and gender deviance that has, past and present, gotten us persecuted, jailed, and murdered.
A selection of photographs by Jürgen Baldiga (1959–1993) is on display at the Biennale at the Trade Fair Palace through September 13, 2026. In a close dialogue with the exhibited works we also present the series "Warmth That Only Fire Can Give – A Portrait Series" by his friend Aron Neubert, who photographed Baldiga in the final years of his life. In fact, Baldiga asked him personally to document his struggle with AIDS.
