This workshops is part of a series that started in February and is spread over a number of months. Although the themes add to learning from previous sessions, each day may also be booked as an individual session and can count as a further 6 hours each towards a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC). The sessions build an understanding of how we can use Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares, combined with a set of principles that mimic natural systems to make best use of time, space and energy while creating beauty and abundance.
Taking a neglected area of our site at the Saffron Acres Project earmarked to be the site for our new LEAF project as an example, you'll learn the tools to create a design that meets the needs of people and wildlife - food, shelter, nourishment, beauty, companionship.
May 31st- Learning from Nature: Water Day.
We will gather at Saffron Heath for our opening session and plan for the day before walking ( approx 10 mins- mostly flat) to the Washbrook Nature Reserve, where we will spend the morning observing the river in its landscape, sampling the water to see what wildlife we can find and finding out what this tells us about the water quality. We will also learn how to observe and record the river banks and water quality through a series of simple tests. Please bring waterproof wellingtons if you want to enter the water to take kick samples. We will only do this part if the brook water levels are low. Not everyone needs to go into the water but it is fun!
We will return to Saffron Heath, for a lunch break - please bring a packed lunch.
After lunch, we will look at issues surrounding water use and scarcity, and water justice, with a focus on practical steps we can take to conserve and reuse water in our permaculture designs.The last element of the day will be to start thinking about your own designs.
