Are you interested in adding native plants to your yard? Winter sowing is a simple and inexpensive way to start seeds for the spring season, and it’s a great option whether you’re new to gardening or have been at it for years.Join Cindy from Making Memories with Butterflies for a relaxed, drop-in style program where you’ll learn how to winter-sow native seeds using a recycled gallon jug. We will have several species of native milkweed and other native plant seeds available. Milkweed plays a vital role in supporting monarchs and other pollinators by providing essential habitat and nectar throughout the growing season.
Participants may take home up to three jugs filled with soil and seeds, while supplies last.
This event takes place on January 2, 2026, from 11am to 3pm at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center. Adults, families, and anyone curious about gardening or pollinators are welcome to stop in at any time during the event window.
This program is sponsored by the Elgin Parks and Recreation Foundation!
