Learn to Sew: Make a Tote Bag
In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to make your own tote bag from start to finish. This class picks up where Learn to Sew: Make a Pillowcase left off — building on your machine skills and introducing new techniques including creating a pattern from scratch, cutting fabric, finding your seam allowance with a seam gauge, and pressing your seams with an iron.
This class is a prerequisite for Learn to Sew: Make a Zippered Make Up Bag. If you haven’t taken Learn to Sew: Make a Pillowcase yet, please register for that class first. If you are confident in threading your machine and winding your bobbin without guidence, you may join this class.
What You’ll Learn
• A brief review of threading your machine
• How to create a simple pattern from scratch
• How to cut fabric accurately
• How to find and measure your seam allowance using a seam gauge
• How to press seams properly with an iron
What’s Included
All materials are included in the cost of class — fabric, sewing machines, scissors, and thread. Just show up ready to sew!
Prefer to use your own machine? You’re welcome to bring it, but please make sure it is in good working condition and that you have all necessary parts with you, including your bobbin, plug and foot pedal.
Ages & Registration
This class is open to adults and children ages 8 and up. Because this class involves cutting with sharp scissors and working with a hot iron, children must demonstrate maturity and the ability to follow safety instructions. Parents may want to wait until their child is ready before enrolling them in this class. A parent or guardian must be present for the full duration of class for any student under 18. If your child is the only one taking the class, only one ticket is needed to reserve their spot. All students are required to sign a waiver prior to class.
