It’s time to shake off the Januworries and roll into the rest of the year feeling fitter, faster, stronger, and with a whole host of new friends! We’re super stoked to announce our first skater intake for 2025!
🛼What Is Roller Derby?🛼
Roller derby is a full contact sport played on quad roller skates. It’s been described as
‘Rugby, but your body is the ball’
‘Like a mosh pit at the best gig ever’
‘Full contact ballet on wheels’
‘The most fun way to get fit and make friends’
Join us and get ready for love, bruises, world travel, new friends, even the occasional on-track dance party ;)
-When and where?-
Sunday, 2 February 2025, 12:00pm to 3:00pm at Uniao Portuguese Hall, Turffontein
-What do you need?-
The skater intake is FREE, and we have skates and safety gear available for use. All you need is a comfy outfit you can move in, a bottle of water, and socks, please no stinky bare feet in our rental skates!
While we have rental gear available for use by new members, we don’t share mouthguards (for obvious reasons). We’ll need you to purchase a mouthguard before your first official practice if you take the plunge and join us. We recommend the Sisu mouthguards supplied by Origin Skates, as they allow you to talk, breathe, and drink normally without having to remove them.
-How does it work?-
We’ll tell you everything you need to know about becoming part of the best thing on eight wheels. We’ll explain the programme structure and how you’ll progress as a skater, as well as fees, practice times, and other bits of important info. You’ll have the opportunity to try on some skates, with guidance and support from our league members.
-Do you need skating or sporting experience?-
Not at all, our programme is designed to teach you everything you need to know to level up as a skater. No athletic or skating experience required!
-Who can join?-
Although you must be over 18 years old to join, derby is all-inclusive regardless of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, fitness level, and body shape. DM us or email us at [email protected] if you have any questions!
