Join us to celebrate World Lindy Hop Day on Saturday 30th May! ✨ We’re putting on a community hang with a Shim Sham workshop and picnic to follow 🎶🧺World Lindy Hop Day is celebrated on the birthday of Frankie Manning, one of the most influential figures in the lindy hop community and a big reason this joyful dance still thrives today.
To celebrate, we’ll be learning the Shim Sham — THEEEE most iconic solo jazz routine in swing dancing, danced at socials all over the world. If you’ve ever seen a sudden swarm of lindy hoppers sprint to the dance floor and magically know the same dance… it was probably the Shim Sham 😌 Originally created in the late 1920s as a tap dance routine, the Shim Sham was later embraced by lindy hoppers and popularised internationally, with Frankie being a large driver of that popularity.
Whether you’ve never seen the Shim Sham before or you’ve been jumping in at socials for years, come along to learn it new, refresh, or incorporate some variations. We’ll break it down step-by-step with plenty of time to dance it through together.
After the workshop, we’ll head into a casual picnic hangout — so bring along something to share, a picnic rug or chair, and enjoy an afternoon with our little lindy community.
It’s solo jazz, so no partner needed — and newer dancers are VERY welcome 💛
