Learn How to Knit (Optional 2-Part Class)

This two-session class will give you the skills and confidence to start your first knitting project.

The first session (4/11) will cover the basic steps of knitting. This includes the tools you need, casting on stitches, making both knit and purl stitches, and binding off stitches. The first session will include a discussion of beginner projects, how to read a pattern, and how to pick out materials for a project. The focus of the first session is on practicing the skills rather than starting a project.

The second session (4/18) will be optional and structured more like office hours. Students can come and work on projects together, and the instructor will be on hand to provide support. This could include working on an in-progress project, getting help applying the skills from the first class to a specific project, or picking out the pattern for a first project.

Students need to bring: Two double-pointed needles size 7-9 and worsted-weight (medium-thick) yarn. Note that if students already have other needle sizes and yarn weights, they will work and don't need to buy more.

Below are the dates for each part of the class. You only have to register for the first date listed (April 11th). You have the option during checkout to let us know whether you plan on attending the second optional session, and you may email us at [email protected] if that answer changes:

• Session One (Required): Saturday, April 11, from 2–4pm at the NE Seattle Tool Library
• Session Two (Optional): Saturday, April 18, from 2–4pm at the NE Seattle Tool Library

About the instructor, Sarah Hilton: Sarah learned how to knit when she was seven years old and she has been knitting consistently for the last six years. She currently knits socks, scarves, hats, mittens, sweaters, and pot holders. She considers herself mostly a self-taught knitter. Her aunt taught her the basics (like what she is proposing in this class) when she was young and she built up her knitting skills from books, blogs, and youtube videos. Sarah wants to show others how to use these resources to support their knitting journey.

This class is a part of our Fabrics and Fibers Skill Series, which includes 12 classes and 1 event that hope to give you the opportunity to learn a variety of textile-based skills.

Our sliding scale for classes helps to reduce barriers for participation while retaining sufficient income for Seattle REconomy, which owns and operates the NE Seattle and Shoreline tool libraries. Please choose the level that best fits your family’s income.

ACCESSIBILITY:

• Much of the NE Seattle Tool Library interior is wheelchair accessible. All entrances have ramps that may exceed a 5 degree slope. The all-gender restroom is quite small and not ADA compliant.
• Non-English and ASL interpreters are not provided at our classes and events, however attendees are welcome to bring their own interpreters.
• Please contact us with any accessibility notes or requests.

GETTING THERE:

• By transit: Served by King County Metro bus route 372 stopping along Lake City Way NE at NE 98th St. Route 61 stops at NE Northgate Way & 23rd Ave NE and is a ½ mile walk from the tool library.
• By bike: There are multiple bicycle route options available to the tool library, and you are welcome to stow your bicycle inside the tool library during your visit.
• Car parking: There is a gravel parking lot that fits about 10 cars, and an asphalt parking lot that fits 5 cars. There is no ADA accessible parking.

Children are welcome at some classes with their parent or guardian on a case-by-case basis, either as a student or as an observer.
