It's time to plant the last crop of the season! Join us in planting 5+ varieties of hardneck and softneck garlic in the garden space behind the schoolhouse. Garlic is an amazing, low-maintenance crop with tons of health benefits and a long shelf life - plus, it comes with the promise of creating your own garlic seed in just one season. Also, spicy breath. THE PLAN:
1. We'll begin with a lesson on growing garlic, including seasonal maintenance, harvesting, and curing. A take-home guide will be available. (15 min)
2. Tasks will include final bed prep, sorting cloves, planting, raking, and watering. (60 min)
3. We'll finish with a review of the varieties planted and what's next for our garlic patch! Leftover seed will be shared with the group. (15 min)
VARIETIES:
These bulbs are sourced from re-plantings by Milton Community Garden and the Slow Food St. Louis Project.
+California White
+Inchelium Red
+Romanian Red
+Piasa Pearl (a Flourish Homestead special!)
+Purple Glazer
+and more
HOUSEKEEPING:
+Please wear weather-appropriate garden attire, including gloves, warm pants, and close-toed shoes. Tools and extra gloves will be on hand.
+Some work will require bending, kneeling, and stretching for 30+ minutes. Please know there are other tasks such as separating garlic cloves and raking soil that do not require lifting or stooping. Pure moral support is also welcome! :)
+Light refreshments and some seating will be available. Please bring a lawn chair if you prefer.
Let's end the season with this garlic thang! I look forward to celebrating the year and sharing knowledge with our community! <3 <3 <3
