Andy & Melissa Banthorpe are the County Moth Recorders for Bedfordshire and experts in all aspects of moth recording. Their knowledge of leaf mines is respected country wide and we are delighted that they are able to lead this workshop.
Leaf mines are created by insects including some very small moths – finding the mines, identifying the tree and plant species and the type of mine can lead to the identification of the moth. The workshop, will involve collecting the mines, and then learning the skills to identify some of the mines.
The workshop may slightly vary depending on weather conditions but should involve an introduction to leaf mines, followed by a walk around the grounds to identify trees & plants and collect leaves which may have mines (not all blotches are mines). Once sufficient leaves have been found Andy & Melissa will explain more about the identification processes involved as well as website resources available to help carry on your new found hobby.
Autumn months are the ideal time to start searching for mines!
