Toronto’s waterfront transformation is one of the world’s most ambitious projects in landscape-led city building. Once an industrialized and ecologically degraded shoreline, the waterfront is now being reshaped through parks, flood-protection landforms, new infrastructure, and public spaces that integrate climate resilience, Indigenous reconciliation, design excellence, housing, and public life.
A full day of presentations and panel discussions will take place in the Daniels Building Main Hall October 2, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Featured presentations include: Kikawinaw Askiy by Trina Moyan; The Next Wave of Waterfront Revitalization by George Zegarac and Chris Glaisek (Waterfront Toronto); At the Intersection of Land and Water: Resiliency, Experience, and City Making by Laura Solano and Emily Mueller De Celis (MVVA); Connecting Communities: Toronto Identity by Adriaan Gueze and Shelley Long (West 8); Breaking Water by Marc Hallé (CCxA); Wild by Design by Lisa Tziona Switkin (Field Operations) and City Nature by Rasmus Astrup (SLA) and Terence Radford (Trophic).
Each presentation will be followed by a panel dialogue. Leading with Landscape aims to enhance the legibility of landscape architecture's role in shaping a more resilient, inclusive, and climate-adaptive form of city-building. As Toronto's waterfront undergoes a profound transformation rooted in regeneration and reconciliation, this investigation examines the impact of this shift on Toronto’s emergence as a global 21st-century waterfront city.
