SYNOPSIS
R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)" is a science fiction play written by Czechoslovakian playwright and author Karel Čapek in 1920. The story is set in a futuristic world where a company named Rossum's Universal Robots manufactures artificial people called "robots." These robots are not mechanical beings but are created from synthetic organic material, resembling humans both physically and mentally. The play explores themes of industrialization, dehumanization, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. "R.U.R." is a seminal work that introduced the term "robot" to the world and remains a thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of artificial life and the consequences of playing God.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
Director’s Note: I’m looking for actors who are not afraid to explore their limits, who like a challenge, who work well in an ensemble, and who want to create art. I am a collaborative director with a big vision for this production and I need actors who are committed to bringing their best ideas, their best attitudes, and a desire to create something very special. This is a difficult play, to be sure, and it will require a lot of prep work on the part of everyone involved. Lakeside Community Theatre believes in the power of theatre and is not afraid to tackle challenging plays, so you, as the performer, must be unafraid as well. If you’re ready to take on this challenge 100%, then I want to see you at auditions. Let’s create some magic.
REHEARSALS
Rehearsals begin February 23, 2025, and will generally run Sunday – Wednesday until Tech Week.
Times TBD.
Please come to auditions prepared with all conflicts that will occur during the rehearsal period.
There are no rehearsals planned during Spring Break week in March (dates TBD), subject to change if needed.

Note: Some characters will double as Robots. There may also be additional Robots who will be used as backstage crew. Actors who play Robots must be able to portray the nuances between human movement and speech and those that distinguish them as Robots.
