Layer of Protection Analysis

From October 8–9, 2026, KIVI and IChemE bring a two-day Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) course to Amsterdam. Delivered by experienced industry practitioners, the training helps engineers and process safety professionals learn how to evaluate risk scenarios and assess the effectiveness of independent protection layers.
Over the course, participants dig into LOPA methodology, risk tolerance criteria, scenario development, and how to apply results in real decision-making around process safety. By the end, attendees will understand how to decide whether a process needs a safety instrumented system (SIS), what safety integrity level (SIL) is required, how to define an Independent Protection Layer (IPL), how to manage these systems across an installation's life cycle, and how to lead a LOPA study themselves.
The course is aimed at process safety engineers, loss prevention specialists, production and process design engineers, project engineers, process programmers, instrument control designers, and anyone tasked with leading a LOPA study.
It's delivered by IChemE, the UK-based professional body for chemical, biochemical, and process engineers founded in 1922, known for its quality-assured training in process safety and technical engineering. Registration is available through IChemE's website.
