Lawsuit Deadline! Truth, Your Options and Questions to Ask - Make an Informed Decision
Deadline to file Non-Economic Loss legal claims: January 7, 2027
In the context of the Eaton Fire and Southern California Edison’s Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program, non-economic losses refer to compensation for personal, intangible harms that are not directly measurable in dollars, including emotional distress, grief, mental anguish, trauma, loss of enjoyment of life, and other non-financial impacts resulting from the fire.
With this deadline rapidly approaching, and because attorneys need sufficient time to evaluate and prepare potential claims, the NAACP - Pasadena Good Trouble Alliance believes it is important to equip our community with information that can help individuals make informed decisions about their legal options. The purpose of this workshop is educational. It is designed to provide information, answer questions, and help community members better understand the considerations involved in deciding whether to file a Non-Economic Loss claim before the upcoming deadline. The program will feature a panel of attorneys with experience in disaster-related litigation who will discuss:
- What non-economic loss claims are and who may qualify
- Reasons individuals may choose to file a claim
- Reasons individuals may decide not to file a claim
- Important deadlines and legal considerations
- Questions to ask when evaluating legal representation
- How legal claims interact with insurance recovery and other compensation programs
If you lost your home, were displaced from your home for any period of time, incurred costs to remediate your property before returning, evacuated under emergency conditions, experienced significant emotional distress, or suffered other personal impacts from the fire, you may wish to explore whether a Non-Economic Loss claim is appropriate for your circumstances. In addition, nearly two years have passed since the fire.
Many community members continue to struggle with unresolved insurance claims, delayed payments, underpayments, and disputes regarding coverage. As a result, an increasing number of residents are asking whether legal action against an insurance company may be appropriate. To address these concerns, a knowledgeable representative will discuss common insurance-related issues and available options. This workshop will provide an opportunity to hear from legal professionals, learn from fellow community members, and gain information that may help you determine your next steps on your recovery journey.
