Lava Lands Adventures in Central Oregon
About this Event
We have TWO amazing options for our OpenEd families on this fun field trip. Please reserve your spot on the tour that best fits your family's abilities:
- Lava Lands Guided Hike: This family-friendly adventure is perfect for all ages and offers a fun opportunity to learn about Central Oregon's unique volcanic landscape.
- Lava River Cave Guided Adventure: This adventure is recommended for children 8+ years old. Access to the cave requires descending 55 stairs, and participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain in a very dark environment. Warm clothing and a flashlight or headlamp are required, as the cave remains about 42°F year-round.
Our guided hikes begin at 10:00 a.m. and will wrap up around 12:00 p.m.
We'll also have coffee, juice, bagels, and donuts available in the parking lot before the hike begins, so feel free to arrive a little early to enjoy breakfast and visit with other Open Ed families.
Located just south of Bend, Lava Lands showcases lava flows created by the eruption of Lava Butte nearly 7,000 years ago. Along the trail, we'll explore volcanic rock formations, discover how the landscape was shaped, and learn about the plants and wildlife that have adapted to this remarkable environment.
