Launch of Bang My Car

Uncle? UNCLE? If you know this familiar figure, he is alive and has much to say in the Singlish and English stories of Bang My Car.
Celebrate the return of Bang My Car with author Ann Ang, joined by poet Cheng Him, who will be channelling his inner Ah Seng as a companion voice. Together, these two writers bring Uncle and Ah Seng to life, giving them their right of place within Singapore literature.

About the Book:
Uncle: we all know him. This is the man who picks his nose on the bus, who will fight for his country and fight you to do it his way. He will shout you into submission while astounding you with his tenderness towards his wife. His standard answer to all your questions is “nothing.” Singaporean to the core, Bang My Car is a volume of short stories narrated in a mixture of colloquial Singlish and standard English that reinvents classic prose forms from the ghost story to the university admissions essay through the figure of Uncle
About the Speakers:
A published writer of poetry, fiction and literary criticism, ANN ANG is the author of the poetry collection Burning Walls for Paper Spirits (2021). She has also edited several books, including Here was Once the Sea: An Anthology of Southeast Asian Eco-Writing (2023) and Waves Rising: Collected Works of Ho Poh Fun & Responses (2024). She is assistant professor in English literature at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
CHENG HIM is from Singapore, and is the author of BOH BEH ZHAO (Afterimage Press, 2025).

Their work has previously been published in Strange Horizons, the Willows Wept Review, the Kindling, the Quarterly Literary Review Singapore, the Neuro Logical, amongst a number of other publications. These largely happened due to luck taking pity on this author.

In 2023, by a stroke of divine providence, CHENG HIM was awarded an honourable mention in English Poetry for the Golden Point Award (2023) organised by Arts House Limited. Sadly, attempts to buy 4D and TOTO using numbers found at the award ceremony did not yield any substantial rewards.

CHENG HIM is descended from Cantonese, Hainanese, and Hakka migrants to Singapore. Their lineage is comprised of sailors, firemen, property agents, provision shop proprietors, and herb-drying medicine makers. They are nominally a Buddhist, with sprinklings of Taoism, and also a graduate of Singapore Polytechnic and Yio Chu Kang Secondary School.

CHENG HIM’s literary qualifications are woefully middling and not substantial. They have little to boast other than a track record of reading and publishing since 2014. Nevertheless, they are more than happy to get in touch for opportunities to add fish to their cai png.
