Laugh & Learn: Smart Lectures + Stand-Up Comedy in Toronto
About this Event
Interstellar got it wrong. Gravity got it wrong. Even your high school physics teacher probably got it wrong.
Dr. Bart Ripperda is an astrophysicist at the University of Toronto who has spent his career studying what actually happens around black holes and it's stranger, wilder, and more mind-bending than anything Hollywood has ever put on screen.
On June 27th, he's bringing that to Laugh & Learn.
Here's how the night works:
First → stand-up comedy to warm up the room
Then → Bart takes over
No equations. No textbooks. No background in physics required. Just one of the world's leading black hole researchers telling you what's actually out there — and why it keeps scientists up at night.
What you'll actually learn:
- Why black holes aren't silent voids - they have weather
- What really happens at the edge of a black hole
- Why the gas and plasma swirling around them create signals we're only beginning to understand
- What gravitational waves, cosmic rays and neutrinos actually are - in plain English
- Why studying black holes tells us things about space, time and matter that can't be studied anywhere else on Earth
This is for you if:
- You've watched Interstellar and had questions
- You're curious about space but find textbooks boring
- You want a Saturday night that genuinely blows your mind
- You love learning something that changes how you see the universe
