Latino Book Club
About this Event
Mission
To provide a safe space for the Latine and Hispanic community to engage with Latine literature. Through vulnerable discussions about our cultural experiences and diverse intersectional identities, we build strong community bonds that foster deeper connections through empathy and understanding.
New Members
Interested in coming to book club? ¡Tenemos muchas ganas conocerte! Complete our New Member Interest Form where you'll learn about our group and tell us a little about yourself. Once the form is submitted, we'll get in contact with you about next steps. Please do not RSVP for a meeting without an invitation from the event organizer.
Community Expectations
We have established community expectations to keep the space safe and intentional.
- Be present - Show up as your authentic self. Come prepared to listen, share, and foster relevant dialogue.
- Choose kindness - Remember that kindness is contagious. Treat everyone with respect.
- Surrender to vulnerability - Have the courage to connect by sharing personal reflections. Prepare to have deep, meaningful conversations.
- Hold trust sacred - Honor each other by keeping stories private and holding them with reverence.
- Listen con corazón - Make space for everyone to speak. Take time to reflect.
- Embrace diversity - Welcome all lived experiences, perspectives, and stories. Allow new insights to challenge and expand you.
What are we reading?
- On July 8th we are discussing Beasts of Carnaval by Rosália Rodrigo
- On August 12th we are discussing The Wind Knows My Name by Isabel Allende
Need a free copy of the book? Check with Anchorage Public Library, Hoopla, or Libby.
If you are unable to finish the book no te preocupes. As long as you don't mind spoilers, plan to join us anyways!
Discussion
Come with comments, questions, or quotes to share with the group! Depending on the group size and meeting location we may also break into small groups with a few guided discussion questions. Answering them is optional and meant to inspire connection, not dictate discussion.
Trigger Warning
If triggers are a concern, always be sure to research the novel before you decide to read it. Please be aware that no matter the genre, our discussions can get pesado due to the depth of our Latinidad, intersectional identities, and experiences. Please remember to take care of yourself and reach out for support if you need it.
Language
We speak Spanglish! Our conversations are based in English con un poco de sazón. If you are primarily interested in practicing your Spanish I recommend checking out Club Español Alaska or Somos Amigos Spanish Immersion School. Tell them Latino Book Club sent you!
