Late Autumn in the Southeastern Fells, Malden
About this Event
Leader: Boot Boutwell
Pace: Slow
Difficulty: Moderate, with some rocky inclines with uneven surfaces.
Appropriate for: All. Children ages 10+ welcome if accompanied by an adult.
About Boot: Roland “Boot” Boutwell, a freelance itinerant naturalist, has been leading nature walks for the Friends of the Fells for over 25 years. He has also led walks and/or taught botany programs for a number of other organizations including The Trustees of Reservations, Arlington Community Education, The Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, Winchester public schools, Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, The New England Wild Flower Society and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
About the walk: We will take a walk in the southeastern Fells looking at plants as they prepare for winter. We’ll see if any plants are still in flower. We’ll see what plants are still in fruit. We’ll ID deciduous plants without their leaves. We’ll also look for winter weeds, those hardy herbaceous (non-woody) plants whose skeletons decorate the autumn and winter land- scape. The walk will focus on plant ID as well as fun and interesting natural history, and of course there will be a few poems and a reading or two Meet at Fire Gate #55 at the start of the Jerry Jingle Road trail at the intersection of Fellsway East and East Border Road in Malden. There is on-street parking on the northbound side of Fellsway East, south of East Border Road. Children 10 and older welcome with a registered adult.
Arrive early, parking may be tight.
Steady rain or snow cancels.
