40 years ago today, the Homosexual Law Reform Act was passed in Parliament.
Passed on 9 July 1986, after 16 divisive months of nationwide protest and debate, the Act marked a significant step towards equal rights for all in Aotearoa. To reflect on this, we're opening our archives for an evening of storytelling, taonga, music and performance reflecting on a crucial moment in our not-so-distant history.
Hosted by Louisa Wall (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Waikato, Ngāti Hineuru) and featuring an incredible lineup of speakers spanning political and personal, tickets for this event are on sale now.
Hear personal reflections and first-hand accounts from Welby Ings, Bruce Kilmister, Dame Fran Wilde, Ngāhuia Te Awekōtuku and Edward Cowley.
Auckland Museum Curators Nina Finigan and Jane Groufsky will share rarely-seen archival material and collection items.
Performances from Adena Delights and GALS Rainbow Choir.
