The Loss of the Tyne built aircraft carriers ‘Courageous’ ‘Eagle’ and ‘Hermes’ in World War 2

By Martin Lawrence

During the war the Royal navy lost ten capital ships; three Battleships, five Aircraft Carriers, and two Battlecruisers. Three of those five aircraft carriers were built with the sweat of men of the Tyne.

His Majesty’s ships Hermes (Elswick), Eagle (also Elswick) and Courageous (Walker Naval Yard) all represented this country well, in peacetime as well as in the war. In the period they served, both Eagle and Hermes particularly sailed widely, all though were representative of the very advanced thinking going on in the Royal Navy about the value of air power.

This is the story of these three valiant ships and their connection to the River Tyne.
