Ever wondered how actors learn to speak with convincing accents? How much can you express with only 120 words? How can games and music help you learn a language? And how does an ordinary Bulgarian girl become a hyperpolyglot who speaks 14 languages?
This and much more will be explored during this full day of language-related talks and workshops, hosted by Stockholm Polyglots. There will also be short music, dance, and movement breaks between sessions throughout the day. All are welcome to have lunch together at a restaurant nearby. And after the program ends, we will go out together for dinner or drinks for those who would like to continue the conversations.
The program is free of charge, no advance booking is required. Coffee and refreshments will be provided.
10:30–11:00 Coffee and mingling
11:00–11:15 Welcome speech and introduction
11:15–11:45 My journey through 14 languages
How does an ordinary Bulgarian girl become a hyperpolyglot who speaks 14 languages? In this online talk from Germany, Helga shares her language learning journey.
She talks about motivation, challenges, and what has driven her to continue learning new languages. After the presentation, there will be time for a Q&A where the audience can ask questions directly.
12:00–12:45 Talk like a Swede – How actors learn accents
Ever wondered how actors learn to speak with convincing accents? In this workshop, we explore how actors work with accents and pronunciation in a practical, hands-on way. Based on Dr. David Alan Stern’s approach to the “center of resonance,” we examine how voice placement influences accent and pronunciation.
We begin with a short guided introduction to a Scandinavian accent in English. Then we move on to practical exercises where you get to try the techniques yourself in speech.
The workshop is suitable both for learners of Swedish who want to improve their accent, and for Swedish speakers who want to sound more natural and expressive in other languages.
12:45–14:00 Lunch
14:00–14:30 Music and digital tools in language teaching
How can games and music make language learning more engaging and effective? In this workshop, you will get to try digital tools such as Kahoot!, Blooket, and LyricsTraining.
We explore how these tools can be used to increase motivation, participation, and active language practice in both teaching and learning. The focus is on practical examples that you can start using right away.
14:45–15:30 Navigate your language learning – find direction and motivation
Would you like greater clarity about where you are heading with your language learning and what drives you forward? In this interactive workshop, you will reflect on your learning process and work more consciously with your goals.
We explore direction, motivation, resources, obstacles, and milestones along the way using a simple model. You will gain concrete tools and new perspectives to help you take the next step in your language development.
The workshop is suitable for all language learners, regardless of level.
15:45–16:30 How do you build a language? An introduction to Toki Pona
How much can you express with only around 120 words? In this workshop, you will get an introduction to Toki Pona, a minimalist constructed language.
We explore how simple building blocks can be combined to create meaning and new ways of thinking. You will also get to try communicating in the language yourself.
The workshop offers a unique insight into how language can shape the way we perceive the world.
16:30–16:45 Closing session
17:00 - -
After the program ends, we will go out together for dinner or drinks for those who would like to continue the conversations.
Welcome!
About Stockholm Polyglots
Stockholm Polyglots is a non-profit language community based in Stockholm for language enthusiasts from all over the world. There is no requirement for how many languages you speak to join — everyone is welcome, regardless of level.
We organize language events (“Polyglot Evenings”) every other week, featuring language tables, interactive activities, presentations on language and culture by members, as well as community gatherings such as summer picnics.
Our events are designed to combine social interaction with structured programming, creating opportunities for both meaningful conversations and active language use.
The association has also been featured in the media, including an SVT/UR program about language learning, and has participated in events such as Järvaveckan.
We believe that every new language opens a new side of ourselves, changes how we see the world, and helps build bridges between people in society.
