Painting landscapes is an art genre that crosses all styles of artistic expression from representational to impressionistic to abstract. Both artists and collectors are captured by the natural beauty that surrounds us. It brings a piece of our personal experiences of the great outdoors into our homes for a lifetime of joy.
Supplies provided by the Student. List will be put on the website shortly.
Skill-Building Goals:
Students will learn how to choose a landscape motif that can be translated into a good painting.
Students will learn some of the types of landscape paintings that provide compelling compositions and hold a viewer’s eye.
Students will learn how to edit their reference images to create more cohesive and engaging paintings.
Students will learn how to identify a range of values in their subject and how a range in color values describe depth and form to the viewer’s eye.
Students will learn how to differentiate between warm vs cool paint mixtures and how to use them effectively in a landscape painting.
Atmospheric Perspective, which is a critical technique in landscape painting, will be discussed and emphasized throughout the four-week class.
The instructor will discuss edges and brushwork and loose painting techniques for more impressionistic paintings.
Students will be provided handouts at the first session and they will paint small studies that will help develop their knowledge and skills for more finished paintings. The instructor will provide landscape reference photos for the first two sessions and students will have an opportunity to bring their own reference photos for the last two sessions for their completed original paintings. Students will leave the class with a greater understanding of painting a landscape in oils.
