About this Event
This event takes place in The Old Fire Station at Middlesbrough Town Hall
Event Description
Ellen Wilkinson was elected Labour MP for Middlesbrough in 1924, the only woman voted in during the general election that year. Throughout her life ‘Red Ellen’ was active in securing the rights of women, workers and children. In October 2016, Wilkinson was chosen by public vote to become the first statue representing a female public figure in Middlesbrough, but this has yet to be commissioned. On the 100-year anniversary of her election to parliament, this hands-on and inclusive workshop will reflect on the unfulfilled campaign to memorialise Wilkinson. You will engage in a conversation about who we chose to remember and why, thinking particularly about the forces that serve to eclipse women’s contribution to political and public life. You will explore what makes for an impactful and inclusive memorial by experimenting with a range of engaging visual design activities.
Accessibility Information
The Town Hall is wheelchair accessible, and has step-free access from street level. The main entrance to the Town Hall is via Albert Road. An additional public entrance is located on Dunning Street.
The Fire Station, the space in which the workshop takes place, is on the ground floor, with step free access. Accessible toilets are available outside the Fire Station.
The Town Hall has an interactive screen opposite the Box Office which gives access information for each of our public spaces, and lets people watch a video of someone walking the route to your chosen space. You can watch this video online by clicking here.
