Landmark Lectures - Galloping Gourmet: The Buffalo Bill Nobody Knows!

A hard-riding hunter, frontier scout, and showman, Buffalo Bill was one of the best-known men in America. But a gourmet?

An early multi-tasker when it came to dining, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was as comfortable eating at Delmonico’s in New York City as consuming wild game around a campfire. He dined with kings, queens, princes and presidents as well as men like Thomas Edison and Oscar Wilde. He was even a food innovator, opening the first Mexican restaurant east of the Mississippi in New York City, introducing popcorn to the European continent, and promoting American cocktails to England. These and other topics will be the subject of this lively presentation by author and historian Steve Friesen.

• Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with self-guided tours of the 27,000-square-foot Highlands Ranch Mansion available. The program will begin at 7 p.m.
• A cash bar will be available with beer, wine and a specialty cocktail.
• Light appetizers are included with each ticket.

Friesen has written numerous articles about American history, has appeared in documentaries about the West and is currently a contributing editor for True West magazine. He worked in museums for more than 40 years, and he retired in 2017 after serving as director of Denver's Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave for 22 years. He is also the author of several books: A Modest Mennonite Home; Buffalo Bill: Scout, Showman, Visionary; and Lakota Performers in Europe. Galloping Gourmet: Eating and Drinking with Buffalo Bill, Friesen’s latest book, is the subject of his lecture for this Landmark Lectures evening.
