We are honored to be hosting an opening reception for the Chiricahua Apache Nation: "Land of the People: Nde benah." An opening reception will be held Saturday, November 7, from 9am to noon MST at the Branigan Cultural Center.
The fifth featured group in our twelve-week focused exhibit run is the Chiricahua Apache Nation, whose exhibit will be displayed from November 7, 2026, to January 30, 2027.
The Chiricahua Apache have deep historic ties to a vast area of the Southwest, including Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico. Despite securing a treaty with the U.S. government in 1852, the Chiricahua Apache were displaced from their homelands through warfare, forced relocation, and boarding schools. But throughout this chaos, they maintained their ties to their families, culture, rituals and ceremonies-all of which trace their origins to White Painted Woman and her sacred contract with the Chiricahua Apache.
The Chiricahua Apache Nation aims to gather and reunite the descendants of their displaced ancestors and to secure rights that were articulated in the 1852 Treaty of Santa Fe. We invite you to learn more about this local Indigenous group, including their heritage and Indigenous activism.
This focused rotating space changes every 12 weeks, which allows each Indigenous group to go deeper into their own unique stories, traditions, and perspectives. The exhibit sequence is as follows:
Ysleta del Sur Pueblo: September 6 – November 29, 2025
Tortugas Pueblo: December 20, 2025 – March 14, 2026
Mescalero Apache Tribe: April 4 – June 27, 2026
Piro-Manso-Tiwa Indian Tribe: July 18 – October 10, 2026
Chiricahua Apache Nation: November 7, 2026 – January 30, 2027
Gila Apache: February 20 – May 15, 2027.
