Join us in Lamoille Canyon for a multi-lake hiking tour to Lamoille Lake with the option to continue to Liberty Lake. Meet up at https://maps.app.goo.gl/ducA3spbowz1ihBVA Road's End Trailhead (around a 45 minute drive from Elko) at the end of Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway from 6:30 - 6:50 AM. August in the canyon is hot and prone to afternoon thunderstorms so we hope to start hiking no later than 7:10 am.
Registration is required for this program as hikers will need to fill out a liability waiver. Sign up at https://forms.fillout.com/t/hpLTkLwHAcus
What to bring:
• Day pack (light hiking backpack)
• Comfortable and sturdy footwear (must have ankle support. No open toed shoes)
• Insulated water bottle (we will have some bottled water available at the trailhead but it is recommended to carry at least 1 gallon of water per person)
• Snacks and lunch
• Sunglasses
• Hat
• Sunscreen
• Light windbreaker or jacket
Participants heading only to Lamoille Lake can expect to be on the trail for 3 to 4 hours. Liberty hikers can expect 6 to 7 hours. Elevation at the trailhead is 8800 ft.
The full group will make the 2 mile mostly shaded hike to beautiful Lamoille Lake. It is ~1,000ft elevation gain and will take roughly an hour and a half to 2 hours to reach the lake. This is considered a moderate hike and may be slightly difficult for beginner hikers.
At this point you'll have the option to relax and snack at the lake before heading back down or take a short break and continue on to Liberty (there will be guides with both groups). We caution that continuing on adds over 4 total miles of hiking in mid-day heat to the trip and you should have experience hiking long distances at high elevations. That said, the view at the end is absolutely worth the energy.
Liberty Hike:
The majority of this stretch of trail is without shade, is a bit steeper, and is another 2.2 miles. It will take roughly an hour and a half after Lamoille Lake to reach Liberty. The Trail at Liberty Pass drops 450 ft into the lake basin (which means we’ll be going uphill for a bit on the way back before descending the trail) Highest elevation on our hike is 10,524 ft. This is considered a moderately difficult hike and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers.
