With a day of "Women who rock the blues":
Betty Padgett - Florida-based vocalist Betty Padgett is a leading light in contemporary southern soul. In 1971 she signed on with Joey Gilmore and & TCB Express Band, with whom she stayed for the next 17 years, garnering national and international acclaim. In 1975, she recorded her self-titled debut album, an eclectic brew of styles ranging from reggae through deep-soul balladry to dancefloor-burning funk. A track from that album, the disco-flavored "Sugar Daddy," became a hit regionally and as far away as Belize. In the wake of that success, she began a two-pronged career as a both front-line vocalist in her own right and a stalwart member of the TCB Express. When she wasn't holding down her steady gig with the Express, she was performing as a single act on shows with luminaries like Gwen and George McCrae, KC and the Sunshine Band, Denise LaSalle, Bobby "Blue" Bland. Fully on her own since the late 1980s, Padgett has continued to shine as both a recording artist and a front-line performer. Whether unleashing a take-no-prisoners throwdown to a no-good cad or delivering the lament of a wounded romantic, Betty Padgett keeps it real.
Dottie Kelly - Dottie sang in a Baptist church, which is where she developed her talent for singing. She would later follow her Aunt Betty Padgett, a well-known singer out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, to her various shows. Aunt Betty Padgett eventually asked Dottie to sing background with her and Joey Gilmore. From that point on, Dottie has traveled the country, and opened for many artists from around the world. Those experiences mixed with pure raw talent, have made her a bona fide soul singer. Her soulful voice and natural stage presence is a force to be reckoned with. Dottie Kelly is a powerhouse blues singer, with over 20 years of performing experience.
Mary Washington Brooks - Mary Washington-Brooks is a veteran Florida blues vocalist, songwriter and bandleader whose powerful voice and commanding stage presence have made her a fixture of the South Florida blues scene for decades.
Mary began performing blues and jazz professionally around 1980 and has since appeared at numerous festivals and venues throughout Florida, including SunFest, the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk Blues Festival, Delray Beach events, and Miami’s legendary Tobacco Road. She has also represented Florida at the National Women in Blues Showcase in Memphis and is a recipient of the South Florida Indies Blues Award. An accomplished songwriter as well as vocalist, Mary writes from a woman’s perspective, drawing inspiration from real life, relationships and personal experiences. Her recording career includes several albums, including Best Seller, Country Blues, Rock Your World and Blues Without Walls. With her soulful delivery, authentic storytelling and unmistakable blues voice, Mary Washington-Brooks continues to represent the rich tradition of Florida blues and the women who have helped keep the music alive
Dani Lightner - By the tender age of 12, Dani had already graced the stage with her voice and by 16, she had already performed at Nashville's renowned Bluebird Cafe and Tootsies, captivating audiences. In 1996-1998 Dani shared the stage with country music legends John Anderson, Johnny Paycheck, and Ty Herndon as an opening act. After a hiatus of nearly two decades to raise her children, Dani's passion for music was reignited when meeting now husband, Josh Rowand. With Josh’s encouragement Dani triumphantly returned to the stage, showcasing her raw talent and captivating presence once more in the Chasing Ava band.
The Honey Project - Honey is a South Florida vocalist and songwriter known for her silky, soulful voice, powerful stage presence, and emotionally honest songwriting. As the leader of The Honey Project, she blends blues, soul, jazz, funk, and R&B into a sound all her own. Honey wrote all five songs on the band’s debut release, Burning Bridges, showcasing her impressive vocal range and ability to move effortlessly from sultry and smooth to bold and commanding. Whether performing original music or reimagining familiar favorites, Honey brings warmth, authenticity, and undeniable soul to every stage.
Rachelle Coba - Rachelle Coba's music is a powerful blend of traditional blues with a modern twist, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and contemporary. Her ability to captivate audiences with her soulful performances and genuine passion for music makes her a standout artist in the blues genre. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the prestigious University of Miami School of Music. During this time Rachelle developed her unique finger-style approach to playing blues rhythm and lead guitar and was inspired when she got the chance to play with the Legendary Buddy Guy. Aside from her soulful guitar playing, she is equally known for her voice and songwriting. This American Showplace Music artist’s accomplishments include powerful performances both in the United States and Internationally, such as major festivals like Mississippi Juke Joint Festival, The King Biscuit Blues Festival, The Chicago Blues Festival, as well as the BB King Day Symposium.
