Cataloguing early botanical works in the Fagel Collection
The Fagel Collection in the Library of Trinity College Dublin contains a remarkable group of early botanical works. These books trace the evolution of the science from the early sixteenth century through to the close of the eighteenth. They also showcase the development of print technology over the same period, and among them are some of the greatest examples of the book arts in the hand-press era to be found anywhere. Joe Nankivell will talk through the pleasures, challenges and compromises of cataloguing this exceptional group of books. The presentation will include an opportunity to view and discuss some of the collection's highlights.
Joe Nankivell is project manager of the Fagel Collection in the Library of Trinity College Dublin. In 2019–20 he conducted large-scale data preparation for the retrospective conversion of TCD's 1872 printed catalogue. Previously, he managed monograph acquisitions in UCD Library. His particular interests are Dutch books from the hand-press era, and the reuse of bibliographic metadata.
Guided tour of the Herbarium, Trinity Botany, with Dr Peter Moonlight
Trinity College Dublin herbarium is the largest university herbarium in Ireland, holding dried plant specimens dating back to the early 18th century and from around the world. This tour will explore the history of the herbarium and its collections, including the associated library and archive. We will discuss the uses of a herbarium, and how digitisation is breathing new life into old collections.
