FANTI CARNIVAL 2026: LAGOS BECKONS AS CULTURAL HUB, UNVEILS ROBUST SECURITY MEASURES
BY RAE AKINS
The Lagos State Government is gearing up to host a spectacular celebration of culture and heritage as the 2026 Lagos Fanti Carnival approaches. Scheduled to take place on April 6, 2026, at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), the event is expected to attract over 40,000 tourists and participants from around the world.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the carnival as a vital cultural landmark, emphasizing its significance as a living narrative of the Afro-Brazilian returnees and their influence on Lagosian identity. "Lagos is a vibrant melting pot. Through flamboyant costumes and rhythmic samba, we are connecting generations and showcasing our resilience to the world," she stated.
Addressing concerns about the large crowd, Benson-Awoyinka assured attendees of the state's robust security measures, ensuring a seamless and safe experience. The event is expected to drive economic growth, promote local creative industries, and boost Lagos' global profile.
The 2026 edition will feature seven ancestral communities representing descendants of returnees from Brazil, showcasing music, dance, and theatrical displays. Tolani Animashaun, Project Director of the Lagos Fanti Carnival, noted that these communities will lead the one-day celebration.
Tola Akerele, General Manager of the National Theatre, highlighted the carnival's role in promoting national tourism, while Remi Dacosta of the Brazil Descendant Association praised the government's support in preserving Afro-Brazilian heritage. The Lagos State Government invites all to experience the 'Homecoming of Heritage' on April 6.
