But as she tiptoes the line between child- and adulthood she constantly butts heads with her mother (Laurie Metcalf), whose more practical approach to day-to-day survival clashes with Lady Bird’s independent spirit. In LADY BIRD, Gerwig examines not only the “teenage tropes” that come with adolescence, like first loves and shifting friendships, but also the sometimes harsh lessons that come from learning more about your parents.
