Labores y Diseños

In a moment that calls for care and solidarity, La Diseñadoras in collaboration with ASLA CO/WY and Colorado Immigrant Protection Teams invites you to gather in recognition of the immigrant neighbors who shape our communities, workplaces, and landscapes every day. Our designs do not exist without the hands that build, tend, and sustain them. Labores y Diseños is a free community event centered on bridging the divide between designers and laborers through conversations on how to care for our neighbors. We'll be featuring screenings of Jardineros — short films produced by Michelle Franco, Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Ohio State University in collaboration with TERREMOTO and Reed Hilderbrand — followed by a discussion panel with Michelle Franco and local community action organizations.

In Spanish, jardineros refers to the immigrant gardeners and groundskeepers that tend and maintain landscapes across the United States. But here, Jardineros means all of us who are tasked with the cultivation of our world of work: landscape architects and designers, contractors, academics, students, and of course, laborers.
Jardineros honors the contributions of Mexican and Central American laborers who construct and maintain landscapes, and whose skilled labor is the foundation of architectural practice in the U.S.
The research entails experimental collaborations between landscape designers and landscape laborers. We re-envision established means and methods of design practice, and dream of
new models of working that invite co-creation with builders and gardeners.
