This Durham Global Week 2025, join the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy for an engaging discussion on the inevitable changes of climate change. This event is open to all students, staff and members of the local community.
Extreme weather in 2024 reached unprecedented levels, with record-breaking temperatures fueling devastating heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, storms, and floods.
The World Weather Attribution Initiative found that climate change played a major role in these disasters, contributing to at least 3,700 deaths and displacing millions. While El Niño influenced early 2024 events, climate change had an even greater impact, particularly in regions like the Amazon and Pantanal, where severe droughts and wildfires caused massive biodiversity loss.
Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, some political perspectives downplay climate change’s role, raising concerns about the future of international climate action. How do shifting political narratives impact efforts to mitigate emissions, adapt to climate risks, and address loss and damage? Can we afford to ignore the science when the consequences are already so severe?
