About this Event
7th House is proud to welcome back LA Loft Movie Club (LLMC) – a quarterly one-minute film festival which showcases the best of animation, comedy and video art – to The Philosophical Research Society for their first screening of 2026! The fest that grew out of a DTLA apartment to become a popular, regular screening series returns with an incredible collection of films that explore the inspired, gut-instinct nature of films that are made under the shadow of a speedy deadline!
For LA Loft’s first screening of 2026 they're not overthinking it: they're making these movies QUICK AND DIRTILY— anything to get it done by their screening on April 12th. Throughout its four year run, the LA Loft one minute film festival has always been about breaking through creative paralysis and committing to an idea. The time constraint has allowed smartphone video and hand-drawn animation to play seamlessly next to each other by closing the gap of labor required to produce work. The “first thought, best thought” mindset which the short production timeline encourages is at the core of what makes the festival work: the idea that the work is worth seeing out in the world, even if there isn’t the time (or runtime) to make it perfect. The exchange of technique, approaches, and inspiration which transpires over the course of a LA Loft program is the result of this belief in the value of the imperfect idea. QUICK AND DIRTILY is a thesis statement for LA Loft, and a celebration of the approach which has kept them going for this long. You can expect the typical mix of comedy, drama, and animation in the program.
Since the inaugural screening Your Lunch Break is One Minute!, the festival has kept each prompt as outlandish and open to interpretation, with other titles like Above the Clouds, Below the Earth and Strike in the Arena!. By soliciting submissions based on a theme rather than asking for preexisting works, LLMC aims to bring together a whole that’s more than the sum of its parts, a kaleidoscopic thrill-ride of every possible interpretation of a given phrase. The sign-up-to-participate model is also an iteration of the festival’s DIY ethos— believing in the ability of artists to create great work at every stage of production value, of commitment, and of their career. The one minute model is designed to give filmmakers the excuse to put as much or little effort into executing their idea as they see necessary. This mix of mediums, interpretations and approaches create a kind of collective unconscious response to the prompt which must be seen to be believed.
Tickets: $10 (All Screenings Are In-Person Only)
