About this Event
We couldn’t celebrate our return without throwing one of our La Fomo Club events. So, we’re back on 19 September at the Whirled Cinema—a hidden gem nestled in the railway arches in South London. Join us for an evening exploring the birth and rise of techno music through the eyes of one of its pioneers: acclaimed French DJ Laurent Garnier.

We’re excited to host a screening of Laurent Garnier: Off the Record, a documentary that not only tells the story of Laurent Garnier but also explores how underground scenes like house, rave, and techno flourished in the 1980s despite resistance from governments. During these turbulent times, music became both an escape and a form of resistance, with rave culture facing crackdowns in England and France.
Screening this documentary with La Fomo is especially meaningful to us as it highlights the resilience of subcultures and their ability to thrive in adversity. The film illustrates how these movements, born out of resistance, have left a lasting impact on global culture. It also celebrates London’s vibrant 80s nightlife, with Laurent Garnier paying tribute to the city as a place of freedom and acknowledging the influence of parties hosted by Philip Salon and Leigh Bowery, which shaped his identity and career as a DJ.
The film will be followed by a post-screening discussion with Kevin Quinn, who leads subculture webinars at UAL exploring the residual power and value of British subcultures on life and fashion today.
We’re looking forward to celebrating our comeback with you!
