LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE (1946) 80th Anniversary.
The French screen masterpiece of romance and fantasy weaves a magical spell... at each screening... since it was made 80 years ago. Conjured by the brilliant poet and artist Jean Cocteau inspired by bringing together within the film the visual styles of Gustave Doré's wood engravings and the crisp paintings of Jan Vermeer and contrasting them in the worlds of the beast's castle and the farmhouse of Belle's family.
Josette Day is luminous as Belle, and Jean Marais' beast is unforgettable. For this 80th anniversary presentation we are screening the most recent restoration of the film at the Orinda Theatre, more vibrant and beautiful than ever before in glorious black and white. It will be presented in its original French language with subtitles in English
