About ESMoA
The Experimentally Structured Museum of Art (ESMoA) serves as an experimental artistic center in the South Bay and greater Los Angeles (L.A.), compelling locals to reimagine what art spaces and art programming can look like. From its inception in 2013, ESMoA has pushed the boundaries of what a museum exhibition can be, juxtaposing old masters like Leonardo Da Vinci with L.A.-based contemporary graffiti artists, to including interactive artwork, like Thicket, where visitors actively contribute to its formation by drawing on the walls with charred twigs. ESMoA has always strived to recontextualize established art while in the process inspiring visitors to rethink what it means to engage with such artwork. In addition to producing experimental exhibitions, ESMoA develops experimental programming, reigning from “OZ'' themed drag king and queen shows incorporating original sketches from the 1914 Wizard of Oz novel, to hosting school tours where students get to physically interact with artistic artifacts like the bench from Forrest Gump.
In October 2023 ESMoA embarked on a new chapter and moved to Lawndale, into the already existing art laboratory. In addition to the in-site "Experiences," ESMoA also introduced traveling pop-up exhibitions that bring art around L.A. County. This shift to mobility has allowed ESMoA to make art more accessible and inclusive in unconventional spaces than ever before.
