KUUMBA Toronto's largest and longest-running Black Futures Month festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary in February 2025. Presented by TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment the festival offers a diverse array of events that honour Black culture creativity and community.
Festival Highlights:
- Bob Marley Birthday Tribute (February 6 2025 at 8 PM): Commemorating what would have been Bob Marley's 80th birthday this event features live performances by artists such as JUNO Award winner Jay Douglas and the All Stars Liberty Silver Eddie Bullen and Kairo McLean celebrating Marley's enduring musical legacy.
- Rock Harder Breaking Competition (February 15–16 2025): Canada's premier breaking event returns attracting top breakers from around the globe. This dynamic two-day competition includes preliminaries and final battles showcasing skill style and fierce competition.
- Pause+Expand Wellness Series (Starting February 11 2025): This immersive series combines meditation guided visualization and sound therapy to promote mental clarity and overall well-being. Offering four workshops throughout February participants will explore practices that support mental and physical health.
- Silent Legacy (February 14–15 2025): This performance brings together young Krump prodigy Adeline Kerry Cruz and Siaska Chareyre combining Krump and contemporary dance to explore themes of identity gender heritage and dance culture.
- 365 Steps: Of Sea and Colour (February 1 2025 at 8 PM): As part of KUUMBA 365's second edition dancers and choreographers Syreeta Hector Lua Shayenne Esie Mensah and Katlyn Addison will perform solo pieces inspired by The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery's exhibitions.
- Late Night: A Jamaica Mi Come From! (February 7 2025 at 10 PM): This 19+ event celebrates Jamaican music culture and cuisine featuring reggae dancehall and ska performances along with authentic Jamaican food.
KUUMBA30 also includes panel discussions masterclasses film screenings and more fostering meaningful dialogues and celebrating the contributions of Black creators shaping the future of art culture and society. Events are held at various venues within Harbourfront Centre throughout February with a mix of free pay-what-you-wish and ticketed performances.
