Kronos Quartet

As part of our commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the National Museum of American History invites visitors to join us in the Warner Brothers Theater as the internationally acclaimed Kronos Quartet presents an afternoon of music spanning cultures and generations, exploring themes of resilience, loss, preservation, and remembrance.
At the center of the program is Steve Reich’s WTC 9/11, a work that weaves together live performance with recorded voices from NORAD communications, FDNY radio transmissions, and interviews with people who lived and worked in lower Manhattan. The program includes works by Terry Riley, Neil Young, Laurie Anderson, Trevor Weston, and Aftab Darvishi, among others.
Kronos will also perform Stacy Garrop’s Glorious Mahalia, a work recently released on the Smithsonian Folkways label that utilizes recordings of civil rights visionary Mahalia Jackson. Following the performance, members of the Kronos Quartet will join museum staff for a conversation about the music and its themes.
