ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Join Kristen Young for an afternoon of painting, conversation and snacks. Kristen says they have no idea what they are doing. View the Mid-Western Ecosystem through the art of butterfly kisses.
In her pop-up show “Butterfly Kisses,” Kristen has a large-scale oil painting also titled “Butterfly Kisses.” It is a 36x36 palette knife oil painting that incorporates beeswax into the medium, which Kristen says, adds more of an organic feel and texture to the landscape. To her, butterflies represent motion and change. Their varied appearances suggest movement and remind us that we can never see everything at once. Kristen says she wants the image to flicker like a kiss. The butterfly forms in the lower-right corner is actually a mating pair—a moment I was fortunate to photograph several years ago.
The other works in “Butterfly Kisses” depict the Midwestern prairie, featuring plants, flowers, bees, butterflies, and cows. In this exhibit I also have included the mediums of watercolor, pencil, acrylic, eco printing, photography and three mixed media pieces of collage that contain “metamerism”
Kristen adds she is currently in love with this sentence: “Forgive Yourself for not knowing earlier what only time can teach.”
Kristen Young primarily worked in oil color and most of her paintings are a combination of abstraction and realism from photos she’s taken as references. The perspective is an underlying feeling and knowledge of the subject conveying a story through doing this.
Kristen says her goal is to engage the viewer into reading the painting.
Kristen was born in St. Paul, MN as Kristen Marie Rehder and currently lives in Fargo, ND.
Her journey for art began fresh out of Kindred High School when she began her college education for Art in Duluth Minnesota at UMD in the Fall of 1991. She also studied at the Morris Minnesota Campus where she focused on the literary arts and poetry. She graduated from MSUM in Moorhead, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Studio arts (painting) and a minor in Philosophy Spring.
