What is Konpa?
Konpa is a beautiful and smooth partner dance from Haiti, rooted in deep musical traditions and social connection. With flowing movements, gentle footwork, and a strong lead-follow dynamic, Konpa is a dance that brings people together through music and rhythm. If you love Bachata, Merengue, Kizomba, or Zouk, Konpa is a must-try!
Why Konpa at a Bachata School?
Bachata and Konpa share deep historical and musical connections. The Dominican Republic and Haiti, which share the island of Hispaniola, have influenced each other’s music and dance for centuries. Both Bachata and Konpa evolved from a fusion of African rhythms, European instruments, and Caribbean storytelling traditions. While they have distinct styles, they share similar roots. By exploring Konpa, we gain a richer understanding of Caribbean dance heritage and the rhythms that connect these vibrant traditions.
Workshops & Teacher
Our three progressive workshops will be taught by Mariana, a certified Konpa instructor and the first to organize Konpa workshops in Scandinavia. Mariana has trained with some of the most respected Konpa instructors, including Sony Laventure (USA) and Dansé Select (Canada). With her deep passion for the dance and culture, she will guide you through the fundamentals, techniques, and musicality of Konpa, ensuring that dancers of all levels can participate and grow.
Workshops will be progressive, so we recommend attending all three for the best experience!
Social Dancing & Community Vibes
After the workshops, we open the dancefloor for three hours of social dancing – a chance to practice, connect, and enjoy the rhythms of Haiti in the warm and welcoming atmosphere of Café Globen. We will play Bachata, Konpa, and Merengue (maybe the occasional Salsa).

Café Globen is a unique, travel-inspired café in Copenhagen, known for its global community and cozy atmosphere. The café is run by volunteers and serves as a hub for cultural events, making it the perfect setting for a day of dance, music, and connection.

Your Host – Bachata Dominicana Copenhagen
Bachata Dominicana Copenhagen is a dance community dedicated to sharing the authentic social dances of the Dominican Republic. Originally started by Lærke in 2020, the project grew under Mette’s leadership from 2022 onward. With a deep passion for Dominican culture, Mette has spent significant time in the Dominican Republic, learning directly from local dancers and immersing herself in the social dance scene. She is certified by Bachata DominicanaRD, a program recognized by the Dominican Ministry of Culture, and she brings a unique teaching style that blends cultural insight, musicality, and connection-focused partner work.
From traditional Dominican Bachata and Merengue to now exploring Konpa, our goal is to celebrate and connect the diverse dance styles of the Caribbean, always with an emphasis on community, history, and the joy of social dance.
