For our first event, we have decided to enlist the skills of sound system veterans and friends; Mighty Oak, of the Scottish Borders, and Common Unity, out of Newcastle, to play alongside us in a sound system rotation - Unity style.
Mighty Oak and Common Unity will be bringing their full sound systems (alongside us with our own) for a 6 hour session of Roots, Dub, Steppas, and more. Three sound systems, one room, and a dance that is sure to be serious. This will be the first time Mighty Oak will have played in Glasgow since 2022, and a debut in the city for Common Unity, so definitely not one to be missed!
Mighty Oak is a roots and dub Reggae sound system and record label based in Scotland, and since its creation in 2008 the sound system has steadily grown in size and popularity. The speaker boxes are hand-built and have become known for their warm but clear sound. The sound has played extensively throughout the UK. Guests through the years have included Dougie Conscious, Lloydie Coxsone, Abashanti, Chazbo, Caya, UK Principal (rip) Marga and Sister Lexxy, and the sound has played alongside other sound systems such as Jah Lokko, Messenger, Operation, MessenJah, Roots Sensation, Downbeat Melody, Crucial Roots, Bushrocker and more. Playing in a traditional Jamaican style with one deck and a preamp, selections are a mix of Roots and Dub Reggae old and new, one away rarities, dubplates and in-house productions.
Common Unity is a sound system based in Newcastle, promoting dub music and Reggae movement since 2014, and sharing lineups with artists and sound systems such as; Mad Professor, Dawn Penn, Congo Natty, Mungo's Hifi, Impressa Sound, Sir Racha Sound, and has played alongside Mighty Oak many times so you know the vibes will be right. Common Unity's selections and 21" subs bring serious weight and deliver an experience that is hard to forget, so we are honoured to give Glasgow its first taste.
Knowehead Sound System is a hand-built multi-genre sound system based in Glasgow, established in 2020 when the first sub was built during lockdown, stemming from a lifelong passion for music and high quality audio. It has now grown in size to a 10-box setup running heavy bass, punchy kicks, and crystal-clear highs. Co-founded by one half of Glasgow’s Shakara, genres can range through anything from afrobeat, funk, and disco, to house, techno, trance, jungle, or dubstep, however for this event we will of course be focusing on all things Reggae and paying tribute to the origins of sound system culture.
