Ready to show off your chess skills? Join us for our K–12 Chess Tournament on Thursday, Oct 29.
🕤 Arrival: Please arrive by 9:15 AM so we can start promptly at 9:30 AM

♟️ Chessboards and clocks will be provided — all players must use clocks during matches.
♟️ Players must complete all six rounds to qualify for awards.
♟️ Participants should already know the basic rules of chess and be ready to focus for about two hours of play.

Welcome to the tournament! Let’s make it a fun, fair, and focused event for everyone.
⏰ Before the Tournament
Be on time! All players are entered into the system electronically. If you arrive after the first round starts, you’ll need to wait until the next round to join.
Play every round—skipping rounds affects your overall standings.
🧩 Swiss Tournament Guidelines
Silence those phones! No cell phones or distractions allowed during games.
Sit in your assigned spot. The computer system tracks every match. Sitting in the wrong place can throw off everyone’s scores!
Black chooses the clock side. Before each round, the player with the black pieces decides which side the clock sits on.
Wait for the official start. When instructed, shake hands, introduce yourselves, and begin together. The black player starts the clock.
No talking once the round begins. Finished a game? Step at least 100 feet away before chatting.
Touch-move rule: Once you touch a piece, you must move it. Once you let go, that move stands. (See Rule #14 for the one exception.)
One hand only! Use the same hand to move your piece and press the clock.
Play moves continuously. You don’t need to wait for your opponent to hit the clock before making your next move.
Draw by repetition: If the same position occurs three times in a row, it’s a draw.
Say “Adjust” first. If you need to straighten a piece, announce “adjust” before touching it.
Tie-breaker: If players finish with the same score, the winner is determined by who won more games using the black pieces.
Watch the clock! If your time runs out, your opponent automatically wins.
No clock changes mid-game. If there’s an issue, raise your hand for help.
Check & illegal moves: You’re not required to tell your opponent they’re in check—but it’s a nice gesture! If an illegal move happens, inform them. The opponent may then choose a different legal move.
Resign or agree to a draw: Players may concede or agree to a tie at any time.
Reporting results:
Winner: Raise your hand to signal a win.
Draw: Both players raise one hand.
Wait for a thumbs-up from an adult, then quietly reset the board and clock and move to the designated area until the next round.
Late arrivals: If your opponent isn’t back when the round starts, their clock begins running.
Need help? Stop the clock, raise your hand, and wait for an arbiter. Once your question is answered, resume play.
