Across Hawaiʻi, Southeast Asia, and India, kites have been used as fishing tools, carried into festivals, and flown as expressions of joy and identity. They illuminate our connections to one another and to our coasts, extending a lineage of celebration, ingenuity, and community rooted in the winds. This two-day workshop invites participants to create kites inspired by traditions of kite fishing in Hawai‘i and Southeast Asia, as well as the Jaipur Kite Festival. Building on BEAM’s project KITE 00, participants will explore how simple materials can be transformed into elevated works through creativity and play.
Important Note: It takes two! This workshop is designed for 16 participants, working in pairs. Each pair will build one kite together over the two days, with supplies provided for eight kites in total. At the end of the workshop, you and your partner will take home your shared kite. We strongly encourage you to register with a friend! If you come solo, we’ll pair you with another participant.
