On this evening we'll begin by readying the body through gentle movement with Erika, preparing the mind with meditation with Ouma, and joining together in sound with Theresa and Kiara.
Ouma will teach connection to the original language. Sanskrit offers profound insights into the wisdom of mantras. Chanting these sacred sounds purifies the mind and prepares us for meditation. Correct pronunciation is essential for unlocking this wisdom and achieving purification. We will begin the class with an introduction to Sanskrit phonetics, focusing on the Upanishadic mantra "Asato ma sadgamaya." This mantra will then guide us into a meditative practice centered on self-discovery.
Theresa and Kiara will lead us in song. Chanting is a gentle path to a deep relaxed, stress free state of being. Teresa Doyle has studied the Yoga of Sound for 15 years. This sonic technology has perfected the art of using simple songs to bring people into a restful meditative place. Teresa sings in several languages bringing us simple wisdom songs from around the world. Kirtan is call and answer singing, no singing experience required. Teresa invites participants to get up and move if they feel inclined.
Mantras both energize and quiet the mind, similar to yoga and meditation. They also work to attract what you want, remove obstacles, and re-center your body-mind-spirit. These chants are a core part of the yoga tradition and participants can use these simple mantras in their own daily practice.
Here's a link to the chant Loka Samasta (May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all). https://teresadoyle.bandcamp.com/track/loka-samasta
