MEDITATIVE CI
Kiori Kawai’s workshop will explore how the sense of physical contact affects our bodies and minds.
Her approach of Contact Improvisation is as a Meditative Movement Practice. It is based on observing breath and bodily sensations, placing the awareness to every part of the body, and integrating this awareness with movement. A practitioner of
meditation and improvisational movement, Kiori Kawai’s approach employs observation of conscious and unconscious choices through stillness and movement, using kinesthetic awareness as a conversation to explore connection between self and environment. Workshops often culminate in a site-specific performance as sharing and exchanging ideas with each participants’ view point.
When we share time and space, what is the most vulnerable, pure, and meaningful way to present ourselves to others? In improvisational performance, our past experiences converge in the present body and mind, shaping a corrective future. This workshop will use awareness of touch to explore the connection between bodies, minds and environment. Participants will engage with environment/nature through their senses to create connection. This connection will be integrated
with scored improvisation, both as an individual and as a group, creating
choreographic studies to keep developing and exchanging ideas to reach performative state.
KIORI KAWAI
(Japanese, b. 1978) is a dance performer/choreographer, interactive installation artist and an educator.
As a dance performance artist, she seeks to merge her body and coexist within nature and all environments. Started her career in New York, she has worked with Carman Moore/Skymusic Inc., Elaine Summers Dance and Film, Lincoln Center, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Brooklyn Museum, Serraves Contemporary Museum (Portugal), Mesa Arts Center (AZ), Transformation Festival (Denmark/U.S), Megaron (Athens, Greece), touring nationally and internationally. Sheʼs built up her own improvisatory movement vocabulary based on the techniques of meditation, Kinetic Awareness, Contact Improv, yoga, and various dance/movement trainings. This led her to designing interactive installations that include human body movement within kinetic sculptures.
Her approach to teaching Contact Improvisation and improvisational dance performances is based on developing awareness and exploring our conscious/unconscious choices through physical interaction between self and others. She has taught at New York University-Abu Dhabi (UAE), Alpine Dance Academy/Wave Festival (CO, USA), Tinkuy (Copenhagen, Denmark), Wrong Movement Studio (Athens, Greece), New England Dance Camp (New Hampshire, USA), Transformation Festival (U.S.A-Denmark), Deakin University/Federation Square (Melbourne, Australia), Savannah Arts Academy/ Telfair Museums (GA, USA), Dancing Water (TX, USA), Azule Dance Theater (NY, USA), Rinyou Temple (Japan) and more

MEDITATIVE CONTACT IMPROVISATION
Wir erforschen in diesem Workshop, wie das Gefühl von Körperkontakt unseren Körper und Geist beeinflusst. Mein Ansatz der Kontaktimprovisation ist eine meditative Bewegungspraxis. Sie basiert auf der Beobachtung des Atems und der Körperempfindungen, wobei wir die Aufmerksamkeit auf jeden Teil des Körpers richten und dieses Bewusstsein in die Bewegung integrieren. Kiori Kawai, die Meditation und Bewegungsimprovisation praktiziert, beobachtet bewusste und unbewusste Entscheidungen durch Stille und Bewegung und nutzt die kinästhetische Wahrnehmung als Gespräch, um die Verbindung zwischen sich selbst und der Umwelt zu erkunden. Die Workshops führen häufig zu einer ortsspezifischen Performance, bei der die Teilnehmer ihre Ideen mit anderen teilen und austauschen.
Wenn wir Zeit und Raum miteinander teilen, was ist dann die verletzlichste, reinste und sinnvollste Art, uns anderen zu präsentieren? In einer improvisierten Performance treffen sich unsere vergangenen Erfahrungen in Körper und Geist in der Gegenwart und formen eine korrigierende Zukunft. In diesem Workshop wird das Bewusstsein für Berührung genutzt, um die Verbindung zwischen Körper, Geist und Umwelt zu erforschen. Wir können uns mit unseren Sinnen auf die Umwelt/Natur einlassen, um eine Verbindung zu schaffen. Diese Verbindung wird in die Improvisation integriert, sowohl in mir als Individuum als auch in der Gruppe, um choreografische Studien zu entwickeln und Ideen auszutauschen, um einen Zustand zu erreichen. in dem wir uns zeigen mögen.
